Recently, many thoughtful discussions have occurred regarding how to honor the incredible legacies of two of our most prominent hospitals, while strengthening our future and prominence as one CHI Franciscan. Beginning June 2, 2020 Harrison Medical Center, including our expansion in Silverdale, will adopt the new name of St. Michael Medical Center and Highline Medical Center in Burien will be renamed St. Anne Hospital.
Given the unprecedented time we are facing as a community, the timing could not be better to unite us under the same naming conventions, as Saints are defined in history as selfless people who lead their lives caring for others—people who embody the same values and strength as our team.
Throughout our rich 130-year history, our ministry has experienced times of great suffering and illness and has always overcome – often stronger and more resilient than before. In 1918, in response to the Spanish Flu pandemic, a hospital was founded on the Kitsap Peninsula to provide much needed care to the surrounding region. Similarly, more than 60 years ago, Burien celebrated the opening of its first and only hospital to proudly serve the diverse populations of South King County. Today, in the midst of another pandemic, we honor both of our hospitals’ legacies with names that reflect the invaluable contributions they have made to our communities.
As with our other Saint-named hospitals, St. Michael and St. Anne embody our mission to serve all those in need by making the healing presence of God known by improving the health of the people we serve.
St. Michael is the patron saint of mariners, doctors, police, first responders, and sickness, symbolizing protection of the community. As an archangel known for defending all people, St. Michael represents leadership, protection, and new beginnings. St. Michael Medical Center will continue to build upon the legacy of caring for the Kitsap community long into the future.
St. Anne signifies grace. She is the patron saint of mothers, grandmothers, women in labor, and educators. As the mother of Mary, St. Anne symbolizes motherly protection. As such, St. Anne Hospital will continue to serve as a steadfast beacon of healing and grace by delivering high-quality, compassionate care at every stage of life.
Particularly as we face this uncertain and challenging time in our history, St. Michael and St. Anne serve as symbols that we stand as One CHI Franciscan, united under a common purpose and mission to serve our communities for years to come.
